When I Dream

Download A Soundclip [MP3 format]

When I dream I’m dreaming of you only
When I walk you’re walking close to me
And when winter days are growing cold and lonely
I’m with you on the sea

On an autumn day I watched you sail away
Leaving the old life behind you
On a crowded quay it’s only you I see
Catching your eye, waving goodbye
As you sail from view

I can understand why a patch of rocky land
Holds no great future for me and you
What if you should fail on the emigration trail
Hope turns to fear, joy to a tear
As I wait for you

The Story Behind The Song
I wrote this with the Great Famine in mind. The first food riots at the time took place at Dungarvan quay. It’s about emigration and a loved one left behind.
