The Moresby

Download A Soundclip [MP3 format]

The year was eighteen ninety five
The ship was called the ‘Moresby’
All ready to sail in winter gales
From Cardiff bound away
To south Americay

She carried a crew of twenty-two
The captain’s name was Coomber
And by his side, his wife and child
Would keep him company
Upon the rolling sea

The Moresby, the Moresby

Two days out the wind turned about
A storm blew up on the horizon
December gales lashed into her sails
And drove her from Clonea
Into Dungarvan bay

The captain he cried “she’s going on her side“!
Her masts were dashed against the water
And Coomber’s wife she feared for her life
And for her daughter fair
And for young ivy fair

The child was strapped to the captain’s back
And the first mate to Isabella
The wild wind roared, they jumped overboard
Into the cruel sea
Into eternity

The days passed by, the wild winds died
The sea returned what she had taken
Five crewmen were saved to tell the tale
Of the night the Moresby died
The night the Moresby died

The Story Behind The Song
