Headstones standing row by row
Telling tales of long ago
Of people I will never know
Who crossed the great divide
And yet it seems a part of me
Is mingled with their history
Just as the ruins and the sea
Are part of Abbeyside.
Looking back once more I see
Childhood friends and family
And Mary’s smiling eyes as we
Were walking side by side
It seems like only yesterday
We whispered words that lovers say
And fifty years ago today
We wed in Abbeyside
Memories I treasure of Mary and me
Sharing days together in the village by the sea ………
....... Nothing lasts forever, yet it seemed to me
She would leave me never in the village by the sea
But time and tide forever flow
Day by day we onward go
My head is bent, my step is slow
Since darling Mary died
Alone I walk along the strand
One set of footprints in the sand
Where once we both walked hand in hand
In lovely Abbeyside
Headstones standing row by row
Telling tales of long ago
Of people I will never know
Who crossed the great divide
And one grave holds a part of me
Much more than a memory
Just as the ruins and the sea
Are part of Abbeyside
